Vocality in theater and opera (Karine Le Bail, CRAL/ CNRS-EHESS).

This proposal of the Sound and Music team of the CRAL (EHESS/CNRS) is based on a collaboration with the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP), the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD), the Fondation Royaumont, the BnF, and Radio France (France Musique & France Culture). Its aim is to study on a comparative basis the use of voice in theater and opera as well as their hybridisations. Vocality is addressed here as a specific ingredient of the representation which cannot be reduced to its function as a vehicle for linguistic meaning or musical form. Vocality in theater and opera is conceived as an important step in the development of a vast program on Sound Studies by the CRAL in collaboration with the CNSMDP’s department of « métiers du son « and the Fondation Royaumont, which will be France’s first organized venture in this emerging field which brings together musicology, the social sciences, and the technical disciplines related to sound.
